Shearing
POSTED: 01/08/2009 19:04:00
Yesterday the shearing gang came. Stephen Wainwright is from a large National Trust farm in Edale and he is our main shearing man and he usually brings one or two helpers with him. Yesterday he brought Tom and Dave. Between them they sheared over 500 ewes.
Amy my 10 year old daughter helped us by wrapping the fleeces and putting them in the sheets (or bags).
Dave Price, one of our B&B guests
also helped us by wrapping some fleeces. Each sheet holds around 30 fleeces. We pay haulage on each sheet so we try to squeeze in as many as possible.
A local farmer takes the wool up to the British Marketing Wool Board in Bradford where it is weighed and graded. The income from the wool just about covers the cost of shearing, about 80p per sheep.
